"Al-Nakba" means "the catastrophe" in
Arabic. It refers to the devastation of Palestinian society
during the 1948 Israeli war on Palestine when Zionist forcers killed
thousands of Palestinians, ethnically cleansed hundreds of thousands
from their homes, and destroyed over 500 Palestinian villages.
On December 11, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly passed
Resolution 194 in which it affirmed the right of return, restitution
and compensation for Palestinian refugees.
UN Resolution 194:
Article 11 calls for the return of refugees:
| |
"Resolves that the
refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace
with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the
earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be
paid for the property of those choosing not to return and
for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of
international law or in equity, should be made good by the
Governments or authorities responsible." |
May 15, 2009 marks the 61st
anniversary of Al-Nakba. Since that date (61 years ago), over
7 million Palestinians have been living in the Diaspora all over the
world as refugees, denied their right of return to their homeland
Palestine by the State of Israel.
To this date, millions of Palestinians continue to be
displaced, uprooted from their homes and not permitted by Israel to
return to their homeland. On the contrary, Israel continues
its policies of forced evictions of Palestinians, home demolitions,
confiscations, residency revocations of Palestinians, deportations,
ongoing encroachment of illegal Israeli settlements, and the
construction of the Apartheid Wall.
